His sister, Cassie is sixteen-years-old and during the book searches for him as he has been taken away from her by "aliens". His mother was killed by a deadly disease and his father was killed by the "aliens". He is sent to a military boot camp, where he's easily the youngest soldier there.He develops a close relationship with a soldier named Ben Parish/Zombie who takes him under his wing.
